A single-herb liquid extract of dried fruit of Pseudocydonia sinensis, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

A Chinese quince will scent a room for a month. The fruit is large, hard, yellow and so heavily fragrant that it was traditionally kept on a desk simply to be smelled and handled; it is far too hard and astringent to eat raw, and is instead sliced and dried, or made into the syrup that becomes Korean mogwa tea. The tree itself is worth growing for the bark, which flakes away in patches to leave a mottled camouflage pattern of grey, green and orange.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Names overlap on this fruit. The Mu Gua of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia is Chaenomeles speciosa; this is the related Chinese quince, sold under the same common name but a different plant. Check which one you are buying. The fruit is high in tannins and acids — not suitable if you have stomach or duodenal ulcers or reflux, and it can damage tooth enamel taken undiluted.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you are taking any medication, have a medical condition, or are scheduled for surgery, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Discontinue use if an adverse reaction occurs. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
